PROJECT OVERVIEW

REHABILITATING THE HISTORIC GARDENS AT THE HERMITAGE

Take one neglected garden on a historic property, mix with an energetic group of Rutgers Master Gardeners, and what do you get? HermitageChicks.jpg

A rehabilitation of a fabulous Victorian  garden! Here are some snapshots so you can follow the progress of the rehabilitation of the herb/perennial gardens at The Hermitage, a National Historic Landmark in Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey. Check back to see what is being planted based on research of the family that lived at  The Hermitage including notes from the owners circa 1880 that list flowers and herbs grown there!

Click on the links on the bottom left side of this page ("Watch the Garden," etc.) to follow our progress, view vintage photographs and learn about heirloom plants. The first two phases of the project was completed by late fall 2006. Photograph of the Master Gardener Chicks © Kayce Baker.
